On May 4, 2025 at approximately 7:48pm, Lee County Sheriff's Office received a call about a one-year-old child walking on the roads inside a mobile home park. Lee County Deputies, Giddings Fire Department, and Lee County EMS arrived to examine the child for injuries.

After speaking with the complainant, Deputies were able to determine which residence was the child's home and discovered the front door ajar. Deputies were unable to make contact with anyone inside the child's residence. A short time later, Deputies located the child's mother, Maria Basquez.

Further investigation determined that Mrs. Basquez left her child alone in order to use the wireless internet at her sister's residence in the same mobile home park. Mrs. Basquez left her one-year-old child alone with no supervision for approximately 30 minutes, which led to the child walking in the road and in danger of serious bodily harm.

Maria Basquez of Giddings was arrested for Abandoning or Endangering a Child and booked into the Lee County Jail. The Texas Department of Family & Protective Services was referred to investigate the matter.
