Sheriff Durrenberger's Halloween Safety Tips

As Halloween approaches, Lee County Sheriff Garrett Durrenberger and the Lee County Sheriff's Office encourage parents, children, motorists, and community members to take a few simple precautions to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and fun Halloween.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office offers the following Halloween safety reminders:
For Parents and Trick-or-Treaters:
- Accompany young children. Parents or responsible adults should accompany younger children while trick-or-treating.
- Stay visible. Use reflective tape, glow sticks, or flashlights to help children remain visible to motorists after dark.
- Choose safe costumes. Make sure costumes fit properly to prevent trips and falls. Use face paint or makeup when possible, and ensure masks do not obstruct vision.
- Use sidewalks and crosswalks. If sidewalks are unavailable, walk facing traffic along the edge of the roadway. Cross streets at designated crossings and look both ways before crossing.
- Inspect all treats. Parents should examine candy and other treats before allowing children to eat them. Discard any items that appear opened, damaged, or suspicious.
- Plan your route. Stick to familiar, well-lit neighborhoods and establish a return time with children.
For Motorists:
- Slow down and stay alert. Children may unexpectedly enter the roadway, particularly in residential areas.
- Eliminate distractions. Put away cell phones and keep your attention on the road.
- Watch for pedestrians. Use extra caution at intersections, driveways, and other areas where trick-or-treaters may be present.
For Homeowners and Community Members:
- Keep porches, walkways, and driveways well-lit and free of tripping hazards.
- Secure pets that may become frightened or agitated by unfamiliar visitors.
- Keep decorations, candles, and other potential fire hazards away from costumes and walkways.
- Report suspicious activity or emergencies to law enforcement.
Sheriff Durrenberger also reminds residents that Halloween safety is a shared responsibility. A little extra patience, awareness, and consideration can go a long way toward preventing accidents and helping everyone have an enjoyable evening.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office will continue working to help protect residents and visitors throughout Lee County. Residents are encouraged to celebrate responsibly, look out for their neighbors, and contact law enforcement if they observe suspicious activity or need assistance.
From Sheriff Durrenberger and the entire Lee County Sheriff's Office, we wish everyone a safe, happy, and enjoyable Halloween!
